Lymphatic Drainage also known as MLD is a light touch therapy that encourages natural circulation of the lymph throughout the body. It stimulates the drainage of toxins in the tissues and redirects the excess fluid away from blocked areas, allowing it to drain into the veins.
Patients undergoing cosmetic and/or reconstructive surgeries such as breast augmentation and/or breast reconstruction, liposuction, tummy tuck, mastectomy, face lift, back surgery, thigh lift, fat transfers, etc. benefit from MLD due to it decreasing recovery time, reducing swelling and bruising and boosting the immune system.
Lymphatic Drainage is highly recommended for breast cancer survivors who have had lymph nodes removed and are experiencing edema or excess swelling in the arms. MLD helps to detoxify the body, combat against pain and disease, reduce tissue swelling while energizing the mind and body.
Lymphatic Drainage is also ideal for those going through a detox, it helps to remove built up toxins in the body from the processed foods we have eaten, the pollution we have breathed in and other environmental toxins our bodies have consumed, absorbed or inhaled.
Lymphatic Drainage is most effective a week following your surgical procedure or detox with 2-4 sessions the first week every other day. During the second week, sessions should be spaced out every 2-3 days until the swelling has been eliminated.
Typically the body needs 6-10 MLD sessions depending on the type of procedure the client has had. I like to be conservative when scheduling my clients for Lymphatic Drainage. I customarily set up the first appointment, review the client’s health history and assess the amount of swelling that is surrounding the tissues. This gives me an idea of how many sessions the client may need. Sessions needed solely depends on each individual and how their body heals.
